abstract:Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF ) is one of the United States of America's federal assistance programs. It began on July 1, 1997, and succeeded the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program, providing cash assistance to indigent American families with dependent children through the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
The old New Deal era Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) is now TemporaryAssistanceforNeedyFamilies (TANF), which pays cash mostly to single mothers with children.
There are many ways this could be dealt with from a policy perspective -- through the Women Infants and Children program, the SNAP program, Child Care Subsidies, TemporaryAssistanceforNeedyFamilies -- the list goes on.
