Positions of astronomical objects are conventionally reported with reference to a "standard epoch"; at the moment this is the epoch "J2000.0" and is based on the position of the Earth's axis on January 1st, 2000. Many older catalogs and reference sources use an older standard epoch based on the start of the Besselian year 1950 - this epoch is called "B1950.0".
