The truth, of course, lies in between the two extremes. Theory X and Theory Y are both sometimes true, and we should not need to choose between them. Some jobs are really bad and really boring. Some people are extraordinarily dim. Some managers are horrid. Equally, some employees are great, some managers visionary, some jobs wonderful. Some employees will surpass your wildest expectations and will, say, suddenly produce a book of uncalled-for motivational poems. Others will surpass your expectations only of their envy and sloth. The world of work is a mixed bag.
