When companies compete to build military hardware, they expect that once a contract is won they will be the solesupplier of a weapon system for a decade or longer.
"A twisty and slippery circuit will often put more heat through the tire than a fast and flowing layout as the tire is moving around more -- particularly when the ambient temperatures are high, " said Paul Hembery, managing director of F1's solesupplier Pirelli.
The admission of the inadequacy of the testing will increase the pressure on Pirelli, who were tasked in 2011 -- when they took on the solesupplier role -- with designing a less durable tire in order to force more pit stops and so create more unpredictable racing.
