Mr. Burton (1577-1650) was an English vicar and a college librarian, and his thinking was informed by both religious orthodoxy and the more secularcanon of classical literature.
These amount to a social canon of judgments about good and evil, complete with secular sacred history, sins (against minorities and the environment), and saints.
It would be an unconstitutional "entanglement" problem (violating the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment) if a secular court had to get into the business of deciding what Jewish law or Catholic canon was and what it said about a given dispute.
