Members of the public gathered at the Garden of Remembrance adjacent to the ScottMonument for a two-minute silence, marked by a gun from Edinburgh Castle.
After a big row a few years ago, Historic Scotland stopped Edinburgh Council from cleaning the ScottMonument, a city centre landmark which remains dirty but undamaged.
