The spokesman said the NFU was involved in ongoing discussions with Department for Environment, Food and RuralAffairs (Defra) in England, and was "hopeful" of financial help for farmers who had lost livestock.
The Commons Environment, Food and RuralAffairs committee said the public appeared to have been "cynically and systematically duped" for financial gain by parts of the food industry.
