Rupp, who placed 13th in the 10, 000 meters in Beijing four years ago, is a veteran of international competition who has benefited from top coaching and financial support as part of the Portland-based Nike Oregon Project.
The most significant of the three programs is Project 40, a partnership with Nike that plucks promising prospects out of high school and college and places them on Major League Soccer teams.
