Governments may be good at certain things that advance technology, such as the peer-reviewed funding of basic research and pre-commercial development (including demonstrations of proof-of-concept), but they are rarely leaders in technological innovation.
The same is true for the Washington, DC, area, where an all-but-recession-proof economy based on the federal government has already managed a return to pre-downturn output levels.
