公元1257年后，蒲甘王朝衰微下来，掸族人在北方慢慢兴起，先以邦芽（Pinya）及实皆（Sagaing）两地为根据地，中期又定都阿瓦。这三个地方，成为北方佛教的中心，约经过二百五十年。
