abstract:Philip Anthony Giordano (born March 25, 1963) is the former Republican mayor of Waterbury, Connecticut, and a convicted sex offender. He was born in Caracas, Venezuela, to Italian parents and his family moved to the United States when he was two years old.
Few Republicans thought Waterbury Mayor PhilipGiordano stood a chance of defeating Democrat Lieberman -- because the incumbent was highly regarded and because the GOP has not won a Senate race in Connecticut since 1982.
At least four mayors of this little (pop. 108, 130) Connecticut city have been indicted for crimes committed while in office, the most recent two episodes involving PhilipGiordano, in office from 1996 to 2001 and now serving 37 years for sex crimes (among other counts), and Joseph Santopietro, in office from 1986 to 1991, sentenced last year to five years' probation for a price-fixing conspiracy.
