James Paulson, a child psychologist at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, is the author of a recent study showing that 14% of fathers suffer depression shortly before or after the birth of a child, just as some new mothers do. Paulson says that when he gives lectures on the topic, he often shares what happened when he typed "paternal depression" into a popular search engine: It asked him, "Do you mean maternal depression?"
