abstract:Ottoman Hungary refers to the parts of the Ottoman Empire situated in the territory of modern Hungary, in the period from 1541 to 1699. Ottoman rule covered mostly the central and southern territories of the former medieval Kingdom of Hungary as almost the entire region of the Great Hungarian Plain (except the northeastern parts) and Southern Transdanubia.
The problem of how to cope with emerging nationalism in the Balkans faced by the multinational empires on all sides (Austria-Hungary, Russia and Ottoman Turkey) was the nub of the problem.
