abstract:Operation Condor, also known as Operation D (D for desperado), was the name of the French intelligence agency SDECE's special service GCMA secret operation against the Viet Minh supply column. It happened during the First Indochina War's climactic Battle of Dien Bien Phu in April 1954 and was followed by Operation Vulture.
Brazil's dictatorship is increasingly thought to have played a major role in OperationCondor, as one of the first military regimes installed in the region.
The clandestine nature of OperationCondor means that its full extent may never be known, but researchers estimate that 50, 000 were killed, 30, 000 were "disappeared" and presumed killed, and 400, 000 were jailed, according to The Center for Justice and Accountability.
