Abstract: The open space surrounding Li Lake blends the new elements with the old ones and re-puts the city into the nature. Sequences of parklands encircle and focus on the lake and its attractions, bringing the energy of urban life closer to an elegant, mountain-lake environment. Wuxi's legacy is intimately tied to water and nature, from which both a community's livelihood and a narrative of art, literature and architecture emerged. As the city has grown commercially, the government-planned expansion led to Wuxi's concept for a “New Lake City”. With the nature as its focus Wuxi's Li Lake explores that culture, offering entertainment, promenades, quiet corners, scenic vistas and commercial attractions, forming a desirable place for work, play and relaxation. With its wetlands, forest plantings, habitat islands, water cleansing initiatives and conservation efforts, the park has engendered a greater community of awareness of the environment and a more balanced co-existence between people and nature.
