The law stipulates that these tests can only be conducted for certain purposes, namely, to improve the safety of certain deployed nuclearweapon systems.
To the extent possible, nonnuclear tests are used to assess weaponsafety and performance and together with past nuclear test results are used to validate computer simulations.
