In television, as in radio, my colleague Peggy Girshman got the same question when she worked for NBC that I often get at NPR: “Oh, so you're not a writer anymore?” Writing is a part of the task, she says, but, with rare exceptions, no one just writes. Most people who write for television are producers or on-air reporters, although documentary units employ researchers and assistant producers who write as part of their jobs, usually to help the producer.
