Named after its destructive path through Long Island, New York, and New England, the Long Island Express (a.k.a. the New England Hurricane of 1938) caught northeastern residents by surprise. It had been several decades since a hurricane of any significance had hit the northeast, and without modern radar warning, the storm came too suddenly for most residents to prepare. Winds across eastern Long Island were so strong that an entire movie theater was lifted off the ground and thrown two miles out to sea — with the matinee crowd and projectionist still inside.
