Altogether four types of errors are detected in this study: incorrect use of modals, improper placement of the modal verbs, lack of backshifting of verbs, and inappropriate choice of tenses. In virtue of some previous relevant studies, three factors are thought to be the sources of these errors: L1 influence, target language causes and learners’ cognitive thinking.
