The marblebust had been fashioned by his friend and court sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel during Gustav's reign, which began in 1771 and ended 21 years later at the hands of an assassin.
We can measure Benedetto da Maiano's preparatory terra-cotta bust of the tough-minded Florentine banker Filippo Strozzi against the finished marble version (both 1475).
