In a statement on Monday, the US embassy in Rangoon advised US citizens "to avoid travel to the Mandalayregion because of escalating violence in that area".
Those sentenced Tuesday included four men and a minor convicted of the murder of a Buddhist monk and two men convicted of illegal association and public mischief, said Ye Aung Myint, advocate general of the Mandalayregion that includes the town.
