But the company that operates the orbiting camera, MalinSpaceScienceSystems of San Diego, California, says that the white smudge looks like the craft's parachute.
"This set of photos shows the diversity of things we've been seeing on Mars during the last several months, " said Michael Malin of MalinSpaceScienceSystems in San Diego.
Ken Edgett with MalinSpaceScienceSystems, which operates the camera for NASA, compared some of the newest Mars images for the group that gathered last week in Buffalo, New York, with those taken from 1976 to 1980 by the two Viking landers.
