"yuan" means the first, and "xiao" night. Since the main activities at the Festival are usually hanging specific lanterns in public places and houses at night, it is also known as "dengjie". During the night,there are lantern exhibitions, lantern matches, and riddles written on lantern as well. The Festival came into being in the Han Dynasty, more than two thousand years ago. In the northeast, people now even make ice lanterns of different kinds of display.
