abstract:Juan Velasco was a left-leaning Peruvian General who ruled Peru from 1968 to 1975 under the title of "President of the Revolutionary Government."
He rightly places him within a tradition of radical nationalist military leaders in Latin America, such as JuanVelasco, who ruled Peru in 1968-73, and Panama's Omar Torrijos.
Once politics had replaced baseball as his primary passion, his heroes would be nationalist military rulers such as Peru's General JuanVelasco and Panama's Omar Torrijos, rather than Mr Castro or Che Guevara.
