The Joffrey Ballet has found its feet, appropriately, after the slightly unsteady moment that followed its move from New York in 1995.

It opened its doors in 1943, with a performance by the New York Philharmonic, and in its early years was host to storied dance companies like the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and the Robert Joffrey Ballet.

Though efforts were then made to lure the Joffrey Ballet from New York (it went to Chicago), it was not until 1996 that Los Angeles got a resident dance company, Dancecorps, which, like the small troupes in Anaheim, Pasadena and Ventura county, have far to go before they achieve the renown of Ms Lewitzky's.
