Brad Setser, an economist at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, says: “Given the size of Safe's exposure to international equities in the middle of 2008 and given the size of the subsequent fall in stock prices, it is quite clear Safe has suffered much larger mark to market losses than any other institution investing Chinese money abroad, including CIC.”
