abstract:HD media player or HDD media player (HDMP) is a generic term used for a category of consumer product that combines a hard drive (HD) enclosure with hardware and software for playing audio, video and photos through a home cinema or home theater PC. It can be used either as a conventional external hard drive, or to play computer-based media files through external media devices without the need for a separate computer.
Offering a Blu-ray mediaplayer with its console at a time when the HD format war was in full swing was a pretty gutsy move on Sony's part -- one that paid off as HD DVD fell by the wayside.
