Once, of course, Kate gets to Harvard, all its doors open to her. Well, not exactly. Kate was among some seventy students who applied for one of up to a dozen places in my Freshman Seminar. Applicants submitted three short essays by email about what they would bring to the seminar and what they hoped to get out of it. So many applications were outstanding that the administration permitted me to exceed the normal maximum and accept fourteen, Kate among them.
