abstract:Genetically modified rice are types of rice that have been genetically modified (also called genetic engineering) for agricultural purposes. The rice genome is usually modified using particle bombardment via the use of a gene gun or more commonly, a process known as agrobacterium mediated transformation.
Geneticallymodifiedcorn, cottonandsoybeans are grownin theU.S., Canada, Argentinaand othercountries, butgenetically modified ricehas so farnot been grown ona major scaleanywhere.
Now four local companies, including one with links to Monsanto, have filed applications to permit the sale of their versions of geneticallymodifiedrice, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Three of them, in a paper last December for the International Food Policy Research Institute, looked specifically at the prospects for geneticallymodifiedrice in India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Bangladesh.
