It is said that conquistador Francisco Pizarro received a 22-ft. by 17-ft. room full of gold, and two of silver, in exchange for captured Inca ruler Atahualpa in 1532.
The plans, which will also create a further 17, 500 sq ft retail unit and an improved market site, involve the removal of the southern section of the bridge.
