The“flow monster” firms with high market shares may be more resilient. Yet eventhe really big firms are paying staff a lot but barely making acceptable profits on their newly enlarged capital bases—Goldman's return on equity (ROE) was 10% in the third quarter. Deutsche Bank, which has relatively low capital ratios (something that should flatter ROE), managed 13% on an underlying pre-tax basis.
