The reserve was designed to create a sustainable equilibrium between the flora, fauna and local population, and more than a million people live in this area.
The five sites in danger include Virunga, Garamba, Kahuzi-Biega, and Salonga National Parks, and the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, which are home to a unique range of flora and fauna including the Mountain Gorilla and the Okapi.
The site is also deemed an important ecological reserve and the trust has sought to manage and protect the flora and fauna found on this rugged section of coastline.
