I burst into my room and looked corner to corner. No sign of Grace. I checked in my closet. Wasn t there either. I didn t see her on the balcony, but went out to check the roof as well. Not a trace of her. As I was turning to go back in my room, I noticed the tree that stood next to the balcony. I had remembered it from my childhood. It was the old magnolia tree that Alli and I used to sit under and play tic-tac-toe in the dirt. The tree was planted about 10 years ago when we were young, and didn t stand over 5 foot tall. Now the tree was taller than ever. It was a full grown tree. It being almost spring, the magnolia buds were emerging to create a beautiful flower. I hadn t ever looked at or thought about this tree for this long. There had to be some reason I was looking. I looked at each magnolia budding out. One here, one there, until I noticed it. A light shining brighter than the sun. I looked closer to see if it was just something as simple as a piece of glass that the sunlight was reflecting off of into my eyes. It didn t appear to be glass. Every time I moved, the light stayed. I pinched my arm to make sure I wasn t still daydreaming.
