业态一词来源于日本，是典型的日语汉字词汇，意思是业务经营的形式、状态。大约出现在20世纪60年代。 萧桂森在他给清华大学职业经理人培训中心编写的教科书《连锁经营理论与实践》中，给业态下的定义是：针对特定消费者的特定需求，按照一定的战略目标，有选择地运用商品经营结构、店铺位置、店铺规模、店铺形态、价格政策、销售方式、销售服务等经营手段，提供销售和服务的类型化服务形态。
