I think in thewriting they're verycareful to soften the edges of the harsher words coming out of his mouth. But you know, the other thing is the waythat the othercharacters are reacting to him.
Koetsu's sources reached back hundreds of years, and yet his wayofwriting "fat and thin" characters, some bold and emphatic and others trailing to the faintest visual whisper, was peculiarly his own (at least among Japanese calligraphers) and difficult to emulate.
