She spoke so slowly, as if she thought I wouldn t be able to understand. It was how you d expect to be spoken to if you were a foreigner in a foreign country. Or even to a child who had just learnt how to speak his first word. But it was embarrassing because I was a fifteen year old girl, quite capable of speaking my mother s tongue English.
