In the immediate future, Ehrenberg said maintaining low interest rates will help students leave school with lower debt, which will give them more freedom to consider occupations for reasons other than salaries.
Some might see this as a disadvantage but on the whole because they know students from lower down the school they should be able to pick up any problems that occur with the difficult transition to sixth form study.
But she also highlighted that the main underlying reasons for under-representation of poorer students was because of lower results in school and a lack of advice.
