Peptide nucleic acid (PNA) is DNA mimic, in which the sugar-phosphate backbone is replaced by a N-(2-aminoethyl)glycine polyamide structure. For optimizing the characteristics, various PNA mono- mers had been synthesized. The synthesis, modifications and applications of PNA are reviewed.
