Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts, who represents the area, told WWL-TV that the fire was in very shallow water, as little as a footdeep, and that authorities would not approach the site until the fire had burned itself out.
The bay is so shallow that the slightest deviation from the narrow, dredged shipping channels (40-foot-deep slits in the muddy bottom) could be disastrous.
