"Indian cottonseed producers actually realize almost seven times the financial benefits growing cottonseed for local seed companies than if they were to sell that same yield at farmgate prices"--using their land, that is, primarily to produce cotton rather than seed.
In addition, rising migrant wages and higher farm-gate prices have led to a 13.7 percent increase in real rural incomes and 16.8 percent increase in rural retail sales during the first half of 2011, CLSA says.
The report said that despite the fall in farm-gate milk prices from 22p to 18p over the past two years, Milk Marque was using its market share to keep milk prices too high.
