The drop in the female hormone (estrogen) after menopause may cause loss of bone mass. When bones become too thin osteoporosis develops. Thin bones break easily, especially hip bones. Steps can be taken to slow or stop bone loss during menopause. They include getting more calcium through diet and supplements, exercising regularly, and asking your doctor about medication to help prevent osteoporosis.
