Joseph Woodland and BernardSilver developed the very first bar code scanning system, in the late 1940s, after Woodland heard a food chain executive say he wished he had a way to capture product information at checkout.
Bernard, the 2006 Commonwealth silver medallist, passed at the opportunity to jump 2.19m, going straight to 2.23 and, after three attempts, he cleared the height.
