静止轨道卫星：又称24小时轨道，指的是轨道平面与赤道平面重合，卫星的轨道周期等于地球在惯性空间中的自转周期（23小时56分4秒），且方向亦与之一致，即卫星与地面的位置相对保持不变，故这种轨道又称为静止卫星轨道。一般用作通讯、气象等方面。
发出的信号会由Cospas-Sarsat全球卫星搜救系统接收，其采用近地轨道卫星（LeoSAR）和静止轨道卫星（GeoSAR）组成的网络，再由地面接收站和控制与协调中心处理信息，提供可靠的求救信号和定位数据，协助搜索和援救受难人。
