雕版印刷术是中国古人的重要发明，是在版料上雕刻图文引径行印刷的技术，它在中国的发展经历了由印章、墨拓石碑到雕版，再到活字版的几个阶段。雕版印刷的版料，一般选用纹质细密坚实的木材，如枣木、梨木等。然后把木材锯成一块块木板，把要印的字写在薄纸上，反贴在木板上，再根据每个字的笔划，用刀一笔一笔雕刻成阳文，使每个字的笔划突出在板上。木板雕好以后，就可以印书了。 雕版印刷术发明于唐朝，并在唐朝中后期开始普遍使用。宋代虽然发明了活字印刷术，但是普遍使用的仍然是雕版印刷术。
