锻坯，指的是锻造后未经过深加工的毛坯产品。对于大型模锻件需要采用自由锻毛坯进行锻制。若用铸锭直接模锻，则因模锻件内各处变形程度很不均匀，将引起再结晶组织和机械性能不均匀，且在与模具相接触的变形死区等处容易残留有铸造组织，使锻件质量无法保证。所以铸锭必须先经自由锻制成锻坯，待内部组织均匀后，才可作为模锻用坯。用锻坯作为锻造用原材料同样具有各向异性小的优点。
