野生薄荷为唇形科植物,“野生薄荷”即同属其他干燥全草,多生于山野河旁,根茎横生地下。全株芳香。叶花对生,小淡紫色,唇形,花后结暗紫棕色的小粒果。这些都和家种的差不多,只是这家种的薄荷出油量比较大,所以油味也较大。
