野生薄荷为唇形科植物，“野生薄荷”即同属其他干燥全草，多生于山野河旁，根茎横生地下。全株芳香。叶花对生，小淡紫色，唇形，花后结暗紫棕色的小粒果。这些都和家种的差不多，只是这家种的薄荷出油量比较大，所以油味也较大。
