返回式卫星，指在轨道上完成任务后，有部分结构会返回地面的人造卫星。返回式卫星最基本的用途是照相侦察。比起航空照片，卫星照片的视野更广阔、效率更高。早期由于技术所限，必需利用底片才能拍摄高清晰度的照片，因此必需让卫星带同底片或用回收筒将底片送回地面进行冲洒和分析。各个航天大国都曾利用返回式卫星作军事侦察及国土普查用途。现在由于可从卫星上直接传送影像数据到地面，返回式卫星的功能又演变为进行需要回收实验品的空间试验室。
