所谓脑损伤，是指从胚胎开始至发病前各个方面的因素对脑的损害。脑损害是造成癫痫发生的外在因素，有化学性的，有物理性的，也有生物性的。而产生的脑损伤可以是器质性的、功能性的或代谢性的疾病；可以是局灶性的，也可以是广泛性的；可以是静止性的，也可以是活动性的。脑损伤发生的时间，可以是产前、产时，也可以是在产后。
