弱电解质在水溶液中只部分电离，绝大部分以分子形式存在，因此在弱电解质溶液中，弱电解质解离和生成始终在进行，并最终达到平衡，这种平衡称为离解平衡。电解质达到解离平衡时，已解离的分子数和原有分子数之比。用希腊字母α来表示。解离度相当于化学平衡中的转化率，其大小反映了弱电解质解离的程度，α越小，解离的程度越小，电解质越弱。其大小主要取决于电解质的本身，除此之外还受溶液起始浓度、温度和其它电解质存在等因素的影响。
