草本、亚灌木或灌木，稀乔木。约1000属，25000-30000种，广布全世界，热带较少。我国约233属，近3000种。本科植物花两性或单性，稀单性异株，整齐或左右对称。种子无胚乳，具2、稀1枚子叶。本科种类繁多，许多种类富有经济价值。
